giant Boeing 747 from American Airlines, and altered it to carry the shuttle in
a special cradle mounted to the fuselage. The 747 was originally used to test

1986 the Russian Proton rocket launched the first space station into
orbit-marking a milestone in the history of the conquest of space. MIR, which
translates as PEACE, circled the earth at an altitude of approximately 400km.
Cosmonauts relied on each other and worked, slept and exercised in the central
section. Having fallen into a state of disrepair, the space station was allowed
